• RIVM — Liesbeth Mollema: Societal perspective on vaccination and the role of social media Dr. Ir. L. (Liesbeth) Mollema graduated in theoretical and mathematical biology (Wageningen University) and completed her PhD in quantitative veterinary epidemiology (Wageningen University). Since 2005 she works as researcher epidemiology of vaccine preventable diseases at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Her main focus is seroepidemiology (PIENTER) and research on attitude/intention to vaccinate and communication regarding the national immunisation program (NIP). Furthermore she is a member of the risk communication group within the RIVM.
• Blendle — Daan Odijk: The need for Bubbles in News Recommendations Every morning, at Blendle, we create a personal news bubble for each user, selected from 8.000 new articles from the latest newspapers. These articles are read by virtually no-one yet when we generate personalised newsletters for over a million users. By using a mix of curation by our editorial team and automated content analysis using data enrichments, we create real-time news recommendations. In effect, we are deliberately creating the much-feared filter bubbles. In this talk, I will explain how we do this and why we think that it is actually a good idea to this, when done properly.
• Election Compass (Kieskompas) — André Krouwel: How do voters navigate through the jungle of populism, polarisation and fact-free politics? André Krouwel teaches comparative political science and communication science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and is the founder of Kieskompas (Election Compass) – a developer of online Vote Advice Applications, with which data is collected on party positions and voter opinions. Krouwel’s research focuses on public opinion and politically relevant sentiments, voting behaviour, political parties and social movements. He has published articles and book chapters on parliamentary and presidential elections, party competition, populism and Euroscepticism. His most recent research has investigated the impact of information on political attitudes and opinions, (negative) political emotions and belief in conspiracy theories.

• Leiden University, Political Science — Antoaneta Dimitrova: Fake news and the citizens in the EU’s neighbourhood: online and offline challenges in assessing their impact Introduction of the Perspective Web
• KRO/NCRV — Luuk Ex: News Dynamics, 2 case studies Luuk Ex, Research journalism at KRO-NCRV, Dutch Public Broadcasting Service Within KRO-NCRV, I work for an editorial team where we specialise in journalistic research. An important aspect of this branch of journalism is the time of our deadline, which is relatively long compared to journalists working for dailies and fast-news reporting. Last year, the subject of my research was immigration and integration. Recently, I have been working on the subject of the sharing and gig-economy and disruptions from online platforms, like Airbnb, Uber and Facebook. I work for different programmes, among them are reporting programme Brandpunt, their online branch Brandpunt+, research programme De Monitor and radio programme Reporter Radio on Dutch Public Radio. Usually I co-operate with daily newspapers and weeklies including, among others, NRC, AD and Vrij Nederland. I am interested in the Lorenz workshop because I would like to learn about new research methods and tools. Recently, I have started making stories with face and speech recognition. Moreover, the subject of (dis)information is of particular interest to me because news outlets have less time to factcheck and copy more and more existing information.
• LexisNexis — Pim Stouten: News media analysis in B2B: looking for value beyond the document Pim Stouten, LexisNexis’ VP of Global Strategy, has held various tech/data and strategy positions in the online information industry since 1998. His activities ranged from bespoke information solutions for strategic clients to in-house data processing and enriching tools and managing product development. He has held roles in the European/Global strategy teams for LexisNexis BIS since 2012, with responsibilities including corporate strategy, partnerships (commercial as well as academic/not-for-profit), acquisitions and research & development projects. Pim represented LexisNexis in the EU FP7 project NewsReader (316404), as well as various other scientific R&D projects.
• Elsevier — Paul Groth: Using the Fruits of Open Science The boom in open science has increased the visibility of scientific process through greater exposure of different types of scientific output (data & methods), allowed new actors (citizens & machines) to contribute to the scientific endeavor and generated more transparency in the scientific conversation. In this talk, I present how the results of open science are being used to create new tools to improve science. I also list some challenges to effectively employing open science results.
